Bridge Housing sends all our best wishes to our residents, staff and community members who are celebrating the Hindu Diwali (or Deepavali) this weekend.

Diwali is celebrated to honour Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). On this day, Rama is believed to have returned to his people after 14 years of exile, fighting and winning a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. Traditionally, people light their houses to celebrate Rama’s victory over evil (light over darkness).

People also dress up to celebrate Diwali, and women decorate their skin with henna decorations or mehendi.

Diwali/Deepavali falls this year on Sunday, 27 October 2019.

Diwali events, fairs and carnivals are being held across Sydney. Learn more
