Bridge Housing resident Ray knows what it’s like to hit rock bottom. He also knows the joy of a secure roof over his head, a paintbrush in his hand and a sense of community in transforming lives.

Ray began a Saturday art group for residents at his former block in Strathfield five years ago and has not looked back. Ray moved to the new Elger St social housing for older residents last year and began the art group afresh.

“It’s not only saved my life it’s given me a home,” Ray says. “We are trying here to build a family. Doing art classes you meet new people and you make friends with them.”

The group meets every Tuesday afternoon at 1-4pm in the Elger St community room and attracts both experienced tenant artists and those who want to dabble for the first time. It is open to all Bridge Housing residents.
