We know that a secure affordable home helps to alleviate poverty.

But unemployed people on Newstart struggle regardless. Who wouldn’t on $40 a day? For the one million Australians relying on Newstart, Youth Allowance and other payments, poverty is an everyday reality.

This is why Bridge Housing has joined the ACOSS #RaisetheRate campaign during Anti Poverty Week 2019. Some 880,000 people in New South Wales alone are living in poverty. They are trapped in poverty by very low incomes, and employers say it’s a brake on their capacity to search for jobs.

Join us in advocating to increase Newstart and associated allowances by $75 a week, delivering the first raise in real terms for more than 25 years. This is the single most impactful way we can reduce poverty in Australia.
