Bridge Housing celebrated NAIDOC Week 2019 at a flag raising ceremony this morning at the Metropolitan Land Council.

This year we celebrate the theme of NAIDOC Week 2019 as Voice. Treaty. Truth – Let’s work together. NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples all across Australia.

The second event we are supporting is our stall at the Family and Sports Day held at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence in George St, Redfern. There will be live music performances, films, a cooking demo and story-telling along with kids rides and activities. Please feel free to pop along at lunchtime and say hello.

This year’s theme reflects the three key elements within the Uluru Statement from the Heart , the reforms set out at the Uluru First Nations Constitutional Convention. Voice reflects the Indigenous voice in Australia, over 65,000 years old, and calls for that voice to be heard through First Nations representation to the Australian Parliament enshrined in the constitution. Treaty represents a call for a Makarrata Commission to supervise treaty processes and Truth is the need for truth- telling of First Nations history and colonisation.

NAIDOC Week runs from 7-14 July. View other NAIDOC Week events here.
