CEO Laurie Leigh with the CHIA and PowerHousing Australia delegation in Canberra

Peak bodies CHIA and PowerHousing Australia have released a report in Parliament House showing that voters want action on housing affordability.

A poll of 1,500 voters across 24 key electorates reveals:

  • 73% say housing affordability will influence their vote.
  • 84% believe safe, stable housing is a government responsibility.
  • 76% agree more social housing is needed.

One in three people in these electorates are unsure if they can afford their housing next year. This shows that voters are experiencing housing stress.

Our CEO Laurie Leigh highlighted this issue at a Parliamentary media conference: “This research shows the real human impact of housing stress. Anne Marie’s story is just one example—before Covid, she had a stable career. But when her landlord raised the rent by $250 a week, she was forced to live in her car until a home became available.”

Voters want their families to have the safety and stability of a home. With fewer than 4% of Australian homes being social or affordable, we need to increase our efforts. Social and affordable housing should grow to 10% of the housing market.
